In the midst of Math Awareness Month, many people look to celebrate one of the most exciting days; Pi Day . Pi Day is an opportunity to get students excited about math and to do activities together as a family. Parents can take time time to acknowledge Math in our daily routines and show appreciation for those working in math related fields.
Here are few activities to help you recognize these opportunities.
All Ages:
Bake your favorite pie (dessert) or pizza with your child. The moments to explore fractions and measurements while baking are endless. For Pi Day, measure the diameter and explore circumference. You also can discuss portions in fraction terms and see who can eat the biggest fraction of the treat.
Elementary:
Sir Cumferance is a loveable character whose math adventures are fun way to explore math concepts with your elementary reader. Sir Cumferance and the Dragon of Pi by Cindy Neuschwander is an entertaining way to celebrate 3.14
Middle School:
Exploring the endless digits of Pi in a visual manner is exciting for all ages. Giving your learners color paper and beads to make decorative chains and jewelry is another way to celebrate Math in our lives.
Using 10 different colors of construction paper or beads, choose a different color to represent each digit, 0 to 9. For example: 1=blue, 2=green, 3=yellow,4=red…
In that way, 3.141 would have rings of yellow, then blue, then red, then blue. Continue creating the chain for 3.14159…
High School:
In the growing age of social media, teens are our savviest users of this medium. Creating a rubric that measures creativity and feedback from peers and have them post fun facts about Pi or the history of Math to capitalize on this skill set.
There are so many instances of math and in our daily lives. Let us know of any fun activities you have planned or have done in the past that help celebrate math with your children!
